What is Hemp Protein? | Manitoba Harvest Hemp Protein Reivew

Yes, hemp. That wonderful product derived from the newly-legalize-in-some-states plant known as Marijuana. Mary Jane. Cannabis. Weed. Ganja. Wacky Tabacky… etc. It is used to make clothing, paper, and various other industrial products. But, did you know that it’s also a very good source of protein?

In fact, it contains all the Essential Amino Acids, making hemp protein the most complete source of protein in the plant kingdom. And, while protein is a crucial component for muscle repair and building, so too are vitamins, minerals, fibre, enzymes, probiotics, antioxidants and a host of other nutritional components – all of which are found in hemp seeds.

In case you’re wondering, no, you cannot get high from hemp products. You will not “pop” for it on a drug test. You will just get strong muscles, a healthy heart, and lots of nutrients.

An easy way to get the benefits of hemp is through hemp oil, hemp hearts (hulled hemp seeds), or hemp protein powders.

Manitoba Harvest is a great source for all of these products, and I recently reviewed their Hemp Pro70 protein powder:

Manitoba-Harvest-Pro70I discovered this brand on my quest to find a good quality protein source free of soy and dairy, low in sugar (low GI), and that was complete without the addition of chemicals or processed filler nutrients. No small task I might add. It seems the world of protein powder has not yet caught-on to all that is wonderful about hemp.

Manitoba Harvest HempPro 70 is the world’s first water soluble hemp protein powder. This means that you can easily mix HempPro 70 in a shaker cup with any delicious drink of your choice. With 20 grams of protein per 30 gram serving, HempPro 70 is an easily digestible, complete plant based protein, offering all essential amino acids – great for vegan or vegetarian diets. It is mild tasting with a creamy texture that is delicious added to your favorite smoothie recipe, or stirred into yogurt and hot cereal.

The product that I tried was not flavored. Though they do offer chocolate and vanilla, as well. It tastes mild and nutty so it works fairly well mixed with many different foods. I mainly add it to my fruit smoothies, chocolate nutrition shakes, and oatmeal. But, you could also add it to cookies, home made ice cream, yogurt (my husband loves to add Manitoba Harvest hemp hearts to his yogurt!), or any other baked good or mixed food item.

It has a clean taste, and never made my stomach hurt like plenty of other protein powders. This powder also blends very well. I never found chunks in the bottom of my shaker cup or any of those hidden powder bubbles. It’s organic, non-gmo, and all that other good stuff that you expect from a quality plant-based source. I highly recommend this product, and have since told many people about it who have also been looking for plant based, or vegan protein options.
