Under a bridge in an unassuming building on the industrial east bank of the Willamette River, there is a magical place. Through a row of narrow windows, light streams in and music pours out. Inside people dance. This is Vega Dance+Lab, the brainchild of creative director Evie Graham. A place where adults can dance with confidence and enjoy a nurturing environment, fostering community and fun before individualism and competition.

When I walked into Vega Dance+lab this morning I had no idea that I would be writing this feature. I was just stoked to be taking my very first Lyrical and Contemporary classes. While filling out the short questionnaire and waver, I began chatting with Joe Graham who was at the front desk today. I was not there to review a class, this one was just for me. But, when I mentioned that I write for an alternative fitness blog, Joe looked up with a gleam in his eye. “Well, you want something alternative?” he suggests, and begins to tell me about a new project that will be spearheaded from Vega called Dance Lab+live. Live broadcasts of their dance classes straight to your living room. I’m intrigued, to say the least. So, I book marked our conversation and arranged to pick it up again after my classes.
So, here’s the scoop. You, my fair readers, get to be some of the first to learn about this progressive experience. Imagine if you could take a Vega Dance+Lab class, live in your living room. Something that may have been previously inaccessible to you due to cost or scheduling, just became convenient and even more exciting. And, all you need is a smart phone.
With the birth of smart devices and the creation of a strategic alliance with Chaos Media+Lab, Vega Dance+Lab can now bring the studio straight into people’s phones, tablets and living rooms. Combining the expertise of an established studio with a major advance in technology, Chaos Media+Lab can now offer access to something that is otherwise geographically impossible, financially inaccessible or socially intimidating. The experience of dancing live with Evie at Vega is now available to anyone with a smart device.
Joe explained that in the Beta testing phase the experience will be available online. After which it will be available via a smartphone and tablet application. By connecting your smart device to your television, you successfully stream the classes to your TV. Eventually, the technology will be available in a set-top box controlled with a small remote and on-screen menu. The end goal is that this will be a complete interactive experience showcasing many classes from several hand picked studios around the country. Using technology already ingrained in your device you can also record and later review your classes. What is created will essentially be the first live, interactive dance experience channel.
Are you excited yet? I certainly am.
The first live classes will be Evie’s hip hop and technique review classes. Your opportunity to be the first to try it out will be soon, in the upcoming months. It’s not quite ready to launch yet but keep checking back here for updates!
