Did you know that the premise of Spartan Race was created as a vetting process for potential employees of its creator, Joe De Sena? And, that each obstacle is designed to challenge a specific area of one’s mental fortitude? Once you know that, the race becomes so much more than just mud and barbed wire.
The Spartan Race we all know and love, was brought forth, expanding on its original ideals, and expanded to endeavor to get people off the couch and get them to tackle life. The thought process that went into its creation, I came to find, is actually quite intriguing. It is designed to test more than your strength, and physical endurance, or even your problem solving skills. It is designed to give you the tools to tackle any challenge that life might throw at you – which is the subject of the upcoming book, “Spartan Up!“.
This book seeks to relate the obstacles you will encounter in any Spartan Race to obstacles you may encounter in your life, and shows what defeating a Spartan obstacle will teach you about conquering life’s obstacles. Over the weekend I sat down to absorb the synopsis for the soon-to-be released book. I will admit, I was thinking, “Ok, so they’re going to try and make the obstacles relevant to life skills.” I had no idea that they actually started that way, and that message would be so powerful. Interwoven with Joe De Sena’s personal tales and stories of inspirational Spartan participants, the book outlines the history of the race and breaks it down into chapters relating to difference areas of your life in which these skills are applicable. By the end of the 20 page outline, I was disappointed that I didn’t have the whole book in front of me. I really want to see how it all comes together. I’m excited to be inspired by, and learn from “Spartan Up!“
